In his October cover story for Men’s Health, Jamie Foxx was down to talk. About his music. About the dozen or so projects he’s currently juggling, including an upcoming memoire and an upcoming biopic—Mike Tyson. And about his kids. As in the past, however, he was less willing to discuss love and broken hearts. Jamie Foxx doesn't talk relationships.

Fox did, however, speak about his relationship beliefs more broadly. “Some people can want to be married their whole lives, and then some people cannot want to be,” he explains. “I just never thought marriage was for me. I used to tell some of my friends, ‘You belong to the universe.’”

Foxx has never been married. He has two daughters and keeps private life private. Foxx’s upcoming memoire, Act Like You got Some Sense, teases out more of his thoughts on long-term relationships. He prefers these and shorter partnerships over matrimony.

There's a reason behind this commitment preference, Foxx says. “When I felt heartbreak for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh, what’s this shit? What’s this in my chest?’” he remembers. “You know that motherfucker right there will make you lose your fucking appetite. It’s too much. And maybe I’m a Sag—committed to being not committed.”

Foxx represents a growing number of Americans forgoing matrimony. Marriage rates among Americans have been declining for decades, with more and more people opting for other forms of partnership.

No ring doesn’t mean no relationship, though. Foxx says the long-term relationship suits him just fine. “Weirdly, though, if I’m in a relationship that I really dig . . . I’m good.”
