Jada Pinkett Smith has never been one to hold back when it comes to sharing with her fans. And just four days before the 2022 Oscars, where her husband, Will, slapped comedian Chris Rock over a comment seemingly about Jada’s bald head, the actress posted a TikTok video titled, “Storytime with Jada: Hair in Hollywood,” in which she opened up about her struggle with hair loss.

The video, which Jada captioned “✨Crown Act✨ Be proud of your crown❣️” debuted only days prior to the controversial scene that took place on the Oscars’ stage. In case you missed the news, Rock cracked a joke about Jada, referring to her as “G.I. Jane,” in regards to her bald head. Will didn’t take too kindly to Rock’s comment about his wife, which concerned her alopecia and appearance, and slapped the comedian on stage.

In her recent TikTok, the actress, who lives with alopecia, opened up about her experience with her hair as a Black woman in Hollywood, and how she feels about her bald head. The video included throwback photos of her beautiful natural curls, as well as the straightened locks (which she noted that Hollywood preferred) as she spoke about her experiences.

Jada began her storytime on a lighthearted note. “I’ve had some definite hair regrets, for sure,” the actress laughs. “Specifically on covers.” Jada then takes a turn for a deeper dive into her journey.

“Being a black woman and dealing with hair in Hollywood, especially in the era that I came up in…having your hair look as European as possible was always the thing,” Jada explained. “And that was really challenging, you know, because I liked my hair out, wild, and curly, but nobody wanted that.”

Jada explained, “I always had to do my hair in ways that didn’t feel natural to me, because I was trying to play the game,” noting that Hollywood executives preferred her hair “straight and flowy.” She goes on to clarify “that’s not really what my hair likes to do,” and tells followers that she eventually learned to gather enough courage to tell people “Nah, I’m not doing that.”

Jada noted that this courage she gained years ago in saying “no” is why she feels a sense of freedom now. “I don’t give two craps what people think about this bald head of mine, because guess what? I love it.”

Jada revealed it was “time to let go” of her hair last July, and opened up about her experience, noting the multitude of feelings that accompanied her hair loss in the beginning stages. The actress decided to shave her head, with the support of her daughter, Willow.

And whether or not there’s hair on her head, one thing’s for sure: Jada is beautiful inside and out. We are inspired by the actress’ courage and self-love, and can’t wait to see what’s up next for the star.
