Jackie Kennedy–Approved Label Marimekko is Collaborating with Uniqlo

Japanese retailer Uniqlo has had quite the year, collaborating with fashion heavy-hitters like Ines de la Fressange, Jil Sander, Christophe Lemaire, and JW Anderson. But for the holidays, everyone is stocking up on its newest capsule with Finnish fashion house Marimekko. Known for its bright prints, Marimekko isn't as well known in the U.S. as it is in Europe, where it has been a mainstay since 1951. But those in the know can't get enough of the cheery graphics and clean silhouettes. In 1960, Jackie Kennedy bought seven Marimekko dresses and even wore one on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

For this collection, Marimekko is using nine prints from the archive made by two of its most legendary designers, Maija Isola and Annika Rimala between 1956 and 1970. The patterns are bold, drawing from a combination of folk and modern art, and are true icons in the design world. Here, the prints are dressed up for the holidays with rich jewel tones on puffer jackets, flannels, and sweaters. It is titled "Joyful Together" and meant to evoke the warm fuzzies associated with the holidays, even during these unusual times. The festive colors and soft fabrics are equally perfect for lounging around at home and getting into the holiday spirit. After all, winter is the longest season in Finland with temperatures below freezing and yet Finland is routinely listed as the happiest country in the world, so Marimekko knows what it takes to cheer up in dark times.
