Iron Man and Doctor Strange Almost Swapped Costumes in 'Infinity War'

It's been almost a full year since the release of Avengers: Endgame, and fans are still poring over the many references and Easter eggs present in Marvel's sprawling Infinity Saga. A recent video from the Emergency Awesome channel on YouTube just broke down how two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most famous characters nearly ended up switching their iconic superhero costumes in the epic crossover movie Avengers: Infinity War.

As eagle-eyed fans may remember, a photo was leaked from the set of Infinity War showing Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) wearing the distinctive red Cloak of Levitation usually donned by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Like much of the footage that was filmed for Infinity War, this shot never made it into the movie — but it turns out, the writers originally planned a sequence where Stark and Strange switched places.

The scene was intended to take place during the journey through space on Ebony Maw's ship, where Strange was being tortured in an attempt to procure the Time Stone. The script had Stark using his nano-technology to build an Iron Man suit around Strange to protect him (leading to a temporary new superhero identity for Strange as the Iron Mage), while Stark would in turn wear the Cloak of Levitation.

It would have made for a pretty cool moment in the movie, especially given that Stark and Strange are the two characters in the MCU who are arguably the most similar. However, Infinity War was already packed with fan-pleasing scenes of characters interacting for the first time, and it was ultimately dropped from the final edit.
