This interactive cat laser toy is 50 percent off on Amazon and I'm buying it for my fat cat immediately

It's hard to get your cat on their feet sometimes, but this toy could do the trick.

Cats are chalked up to be quick, agile felines fit to run and hunt all day long — after all, they are descendants of the kings and queens of the jungle.

Like many, my family cat challenges the stereotype. I’m pretty sure the only time I see Tupac, the family cat, run is if he’s going to his food bowl.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging his laziness, especially when there have been days when us two are on the couch for hours on end together, but I do sometimes worry his lack of movement will catch up with his health. Especially since he’s at least 10 years old (My family adopted Tupac, so we like to think of him as being on the younger side of the age range the Humane Society gave us).

There are a few random things besides food that can get Paccy moving: string, strangers and lasers — the latter being a pretty rare occurrence seeing as it’s not a normal household item.

But, the few times my younger brother brought home a laser pointer, I’ve seen Tupac light up. He loves to bolt around and chase after the red dots. And I love to laugh at the sight of him running with his belly swinging side by side.

So, when I saw this interactive toy on Amazon, I had to check it out.

It’s an automatic laser pointer that rotates at up to three different speeds. We really are living in the future.

How it works:

All that’s needed for this toy are three AA batteries. Once the batteries are in, you can choose from three speeds to set the laser: slow, fast or variable speed. The laser goes in a circle around the cone dome, and juts back and forth, imitating a bug or mouse, if it’s on interval speed.

With a speed chosen, all you have to do after is press a button. Then, your cat is off to the (laser) races!

Don’t worry about turning it off, either. The toy automatically stops after 15 minutes.

What customers are saying:

  • “My kitten absolutely loves it!!” One five-star reviewer wrote. “Her favorite part is she never knows which way the light will move and tries to outsmart it. The light is a lot brighter than a regular laser pointer so it doesn't have to be quite as dark in the room for it to really show up. I can move it from high surfaces to lower ones for a bigger or smaller pattern on the floor. After using it for a few days I can highly recommend getting one if you have a cat that gets easily bored.”

  • “My best friend’s best friend,” Another user said of the toy. “This is such a playful toy for all small animals including kids and cats, maybe dogs if I had. My 10-year-old cat has been watching it carefully. But my 2-year-old cat enjoys every seconds. I plan to train to the younger cat to turn on the toy by herself. I believe the training could be interesting. Another positive side effect is that my kids are doing clean-up more often since they want to watch cats playing.”

  • “My cat loves this toy. The 15 minute auto shutoff is perfect. He gets a nice little workout and I always give him a treat for positive reinforcement at the end of each session! Toy is sturdy and simple to use. Will always keep one around,” another happy cat parent wrote.

  • “This is a lifesaver! We have a 10-month-old kitten who is incredibly high energy and very affectionate, which can occasionally make cooking or sleeping hard.” wrote another fan. “I was a little skeptical buying it because I’ve had a similar product before, and the noise it made scared the older cat (the kitten wasn’t around then) but this one is silent and works perfectly! I wish the ‘slow’ speed was a little slower - the kitten can’t keep up with it and often looses the dot - but he enjoys it anyways!”

Safety:

A laser toy might seem a bit scary for a small animal, but the toy’s design will keep your pet safe.

The light points directly at the floor, avoiding any chance of somebody (pet or human) looking into it directly. Also the toy is plug-free, which reduces any chance of you or your pal tripping while playing.

Don’t worry about leaving it on, either. The automatic timer takes care of that responsibility.

The bottom line:

It’s hard to find something both you and your cat will like, but I think I’ve found that in this laser toy. I just hope Tupac likes it enough to get out of the sink — his favorite nap spot.
