The Most Popular #NYFW Instagram: This Mediocre Pic of Selena Gomez

Because life is really just one long competitive sport that we’re all forcibly playing in, humans love crowning winners. Earth’s most recent winner is Selena Gomez, a pop singer famous mostly for being cute in a childlike way, and formerly dating Justin Bieber.

Gomez has earned the illusive honor of having the most liked Instagram of New York Fashion Week Spring 2016, an accomplishment many others strived and failed to attain. The above photo, showing the 23-year-old outside the Polo Ralph Lauren show on Friday, has racked up 1.5 million likes and more than 15,000 comments. (In comparison, a photo Kendall Jenner posted of herself walking the Givenchy runway scored only 1.1 mil likes. Pathetic.)

It should be noted that these numbers aren’t unusual for Gomez: her previous post garnered 1.8M likes—but this one’s special because it’s from fashion week.

UsWeekly chalks up SG’s Insta-success to her “particularly fab pose" and “self-deprecating hashtags” (The caption reads, “Feeling downtown chic. At Polo’s cool garden scene at #NYFW. Follow @POLORALPHLAUREN to see more. #imnotamodel #tryinsohard”). She’s wearing a leathery black romper and making a kissy face. But I’m not convinced.

I’m no professional photographer, but I did take a photography class the summer between eighth and ninth grade, so… OK fine, I’m basically a professional photographer. My complaints are that Gomez’s photo lacks proper composition, her right hand is cut off, the sun gleaming in on the right is distracting, and the whole thing is just kind of blurry. That’s not to say it’s a terrible pic, or anything—it’s just not great. We can do better, people.

Then again, the youths seem to like it, literally. And perhaps, in the end, that’s all that matters. Congrats, Selenie, you little social media star, you.
