The Egg Instagram Account Officially Broke Kylie Jenner's Most-Liked Photo Record

Updated on January 14 at 10 a.m.

Well, Kylie Jenner's Instagram record has officially been broken...by an egg.

Yup, the speckled brown egg heard 'round the world is now the most-liked photo on Instagram following an instantly viral campaign over the weekend. The photo of the egg only needed to reach 18 million likes to best Kylie's photo of her newborn daughter Stormi. By Monday morning, however, it was already up to over 28 million — and counting.

The account, called Egg Gang, has already updated its Insta bio to reflect the milestone. "Official world record holders of the most liked picture on Instagram," it now reads. "Now where’s our blue tick?"

Kylie herself has addressed the egg, when on Sunday evening she posted a video of herself cracking an egg on some pavement. "Take that little egg," she captioned the clip (her post on its own now nearly has 18 million likes).

We'll leave it to you to decide who's getting the last laugh here.

Previously:

In February 2018, Kylie Jenner posted the most-liked Instagram photo of all time — but all of that might change, if an egg has anything to say about it.

No, that sentence was not the result of a Mad Libs game; it’s very real. As noted by BuzzFeed News, an Instagram account by the name of @world_record_egg is trying to de-throne Kylie’s popular photo of Stormi Webster that was posted shortly after her birth. “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram,” the mystery egg wrote on January 4. “Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this 🙌.” The picture (which features a single egg against a white background) was hashtagged #LikeTheEgg, #EggSoldiers, and #EggGang.

At the time of writing, Kylie’s ‘gram of Stormi’s tiny hands still holds rank with over 18 million double-taps. But the egg is definitely closing in with a little over 11 million — and counting.

Some people in the comments seem curious if the egg can pull this off, while others appear pretty optimistic. “We can do it!” one person wrote. “We’re making history,” another added. There’s also plenty of “You can do it, egg!” to go around.

As for Kylie, her previously posted picture of Stormi (which is also where she unveiled her daughter’s name) has since been cluttered with comments from the egg’s fans. Some people are simply writing the word “egg,” while others are spamming her picture with the egg emoji. I know it’s only January, fam, but this might already be one of 2019’s weirdest moments.

BuzzFeed also points out that the egg seems to have inspired several spin-off accounts, including a “World Record Lettuce” and — wait for it — a “World Record Chicken.” (Get it?)

As for the Little Egg That Could, it remains to be seen whether or not it will succeed in its goal of taking Kylie’s Instagram crown. But even if it does, it probably won’t be long before Kylie reclaims what was hers. (Cough, a future engagement announcement cough.) After all, if there’s one thing the Kardashian-Jenner fam knows how to do well, it’s making a social media splash. That egg better start working on its selfie game, stat.
