How influencer and artist ZHC is using his talents to give back: 'I can help people'

Since gaining viral fame for his illustrations, murals and works of art, Zachary Hsieh, aka ZHC, has started channeling his talents into giving back to his community, donating art and organizing one-of-a-kind giveaways.

“Once I started making a career out of art, it turned into, ‘What can I do to give back?'” Hsieh told In The Know.

Hsieh grew up drawing whenever he could get his hands on a pencil and paper. When he hit 16 years old, he decided he wanted to get serious about his talent and started drawing for 12 to 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

“It didn’t feel like working when I was drawing, it just felt like letting my imagination loose,” he said. “Back then I was pretty shy — I didn’t have a lot of confidence — and art was kind of my thing to talk to people about.”

Hsieh launched his YouTube channel in 2016 and first got a taste of viral success after doing a “re-drawing” competition with his friend. Hsieh’s friend, who is not as talented, would draw something weird and funny and then Hsieh would create a hyperrealistic version. Viewers loved it and it encouraged Hsieh to challenge himself more and more when it came to art.

“Slowly my content evolved into drawing with different challenges, drawing with certain limitations to make things more interesting,” Hsieh said.

Now, Hsieh and his team of artists have transitioned into drawing and painting on everyday objects for people. As schools struggled during the pandemic, a major project Hsieh and his team took on was painting the classrooms at Strive Prep Montbello, a public charter school in Denver.

“As a child, I always believed in giving back, and I realized I could incorporate philanthropy in my content,” Hsieh said. “I can help people, and we were just able to give more and more back with each video.”
