Sometimes you look as awesome as you feel. Sometimes....you don’t.
Let’s be honest: It’s likely you’ve untagged yourself from unflattering race photos, hoping they’ll somehow never surface again. I certainly have. I’ve had my fair share of “my legs look like that?!” moments, but after racing for 16 years, I’ve come to embrace all my race photos. I can’t not. Those photos are real, raw emotion: The pain-face grimaces speak to that balls-to-the-wall side of racing, of giving it your all. I also have race photos that make people wonder if I was actually even trying at all—you look too happy, you look too good. Sometimes I am going too easy, or I happen to notice the photographer with enough time to straighten up and smile. And sometimes, they capture the part of racing that really does make me truly happy.
After my years of accumulating race photos, I’ve come to believe these are the 18 race moments nearly every committed runner experiences. Think I missed one? Let us know on Twitter by sharing your race photos with @RunnersWorld and tagging #MyRaceFace.
