IKEA Recalls 820,000 Dressers for Tip-Over Hazards
Today IKEA announced that it’s voluntarily recalling 820,000 dressers at risk of tipping over and seriously injuring or killing children. The Swedish furniture retailer has received six reports of Kullen 3-drawer chests that were not anchored to the wall tipping over. One incident involved a minor cut.
In a statement, IKEA urged customers who have the Kullen 3-drawer chest to immediately stop using it if it’s not properly attached to the wall, and specified that the dresser should be placed in an area where children cannot access it. If customers choose to keep the dresser, they can order a free wall-attachment kit for installation or IKEA will give them a free, one-time home installation service.
The recalled Kullen dressers were sold online and in stores nationwide from April 2005 to December 2019 for about $60. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Kullen dressers imported after August 12, 2019 don’t comply with the performance requirements of the updated U.S. consensus standard. The recall applies to the black-brown or birch colored chests, weighing nearly 45 pounds. For a full refund, customers can return the dresser in-store or they can arrange for it to be picked up for free.
The new recall comes just two months after IKEA agreed to pay $46 million to the family of a two-year-old toddler who died after being crushed by an IKEA Malm dresser.
