Icelandic announcer goes totally berserk over Messi penalty save
What is it about Lionel Messi and penalties? The Argentine maestro is otherworldly in every facet of his game but somehow manages to be bang average at spot kicks.
After Sergio Aguero put Argentina ahead with a 19th-minute shot that deflected its way into goal, and Alfred Finnbogason pulled one back for Iceland moments later, the stage was set perfectly for Messi to net the match-winner when Argentina were awarded a penalty in the second half.
But the Barcelona ace’s lackluster record on penalties continued, as he stepped up and fired a weak shot at the perfect height and velocity to gift Iceland keeper Hannes Halldorsson an easy save.
The keeper’s action prompted an absolute volcano of expression from Gummi Ben, the Icelandic TV announcer calling the game.

He went equally nuts when Finnbogason’s equalizer went in. OK, I guess it was Iceland’s first-ever World Cup goal, so can you really blame him?

Gummi Ben first made waves during Euro 2016, when videos of his emphatic game calling went viral as Iceland eliminated England on their way to an unlikely run to the quarterfinals.
We’ll undoubtedly be hearing from him again as Iceland resumes their World Cup on Friday when they meet Nigeria. That gives us all a few days to replace the blown-out speakers on our laptops.
