Hunter Schafer Wants to See a Movie Made About Two Trans Girls Falling in Love

As trans teen Jules Vaughn on Euphoria, Hunter Schafer has heightened the importance of trans representation on the big- and small-screen — and she has thoughts on what she wants to see next.
Hunter joined Lorde on The A24 Podcast on January 19, where the two discussed Hunter’s foray into directing, producing, and writing (she co-wrote the special “Jules” episode of Euphoria with creator Sam Levinson). When Lorde asked about her hopes for future projects involving the portrayal of trans people, Hunter immediately expressed her ideas.
“In general, I think the closest thing I have to a spirituality is like, I believe in people riding frequencies or being in tune with certain frequencies based off of their experience, whatever that means,” she said. “But I feel like there’s specific frequencies that trans girls in particular like — I can hear it in their music, I can see it in the style, there’s an aesthetic and a sound. I think that’s something that I really wanna keep trying to portray properly as I keep getting into directing, producing, and writing and all that stuff, because it’s so delicious.”
But the best way to attain that, she shared, is with “Marvel-level” amounts of financing.
“I wanna see it, but with budget. Like good CGI budget, just like Marvel-level CGI yumminess that it deserves I think,” she continued.
One specific storyline that is lacking in on-screen representation is that of two trans girls falling in love, Hunter explained.
“I mean I really just want to see a trans girl love story,” she said. “Like two trans girls. That’s like not a thing, really, in movies yet.”
Hunter and Lorde officially spoke the idea into existence, so let’s hope a Hollywood producer tuned into this particular episode.
