How to Quickly Make a Croque Madame

This French fried egg, ham and cheese sandwich is called a Croque Madame, but it’s actually more like a Croque Ma-dayummm. Cooking on your own in college doesn’t have to be that boring, cold, ham sandwich you usually slap together.

A little bit of extra cheese and a fried egg go a long way. This classic French sandwich recipe is simpler than you think.

Croque Madame

Prep Time: 3 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 18 minutes

Servings: 2

4 slices bread
6-oz. smoked ham, sliced
6 slices cheese
1-2 tablespoon mayonnaise
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 eggs
Salt
Pepper

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Butter 1 side of of each bread slice and set buttered side down on griddle or pan.

Cover each slice of bread with cheese then add 3-4 slices ham on one slice. Then place the second slice on top.

Cook sandwich about 3 minutes per side until golden brown.

Add mayo on top of each sandwich and another slice of cheese.

Place in oven until cheese melts, about 5 minutes.

Place fried egg on top. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
