How much is 'Joker' going to make at the box office?

The box office predictions for Joker have projected that Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the iconic comic-book villain will rival Aquaman’s opening weekend haul.

Box Office Pro are currently estimating that Joker will make around £63 million ($77 million) in its opening weekend at the domestic (ie North America), which would easily eclipse Aquaman’s haul of £56 million ($67.8 million).

That would still fall some way short of the opening weekend grosses for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Suicide Squad, Man Of Steel, Wonder Woman and even Justice League, though, which each made between £137 million ($166 million) and £77 million ($93 million) in their first few days.

However, the big difference between Joker and these films are their budgets, as Todd Phillips is believed to have only spent £45 million ($55 million) on his production while its predecessors cost at least £166 million ($200 million) each.

Warner Bros will also be quietly confident that a positive critical response to Joker will make it flourish financially, too.

The studio are clearly rather proud of the film, as it will make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the next few weeks before then being shown at the Toronto Film Festival a few days later.

If critics are impressed it will give Joker even more legs at the box office, especially as it is being released during a rather lean month for films. In fact, the only other big releases in October are The Addams Family, Gemini Man, Zombieland; Double Tap, and Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil.

For context, when Venom was released in similar circumstances on the same weekend last year it managed to gross £711 million ($856.1 million) worldwide, despite receiving terrible scores and a score of just 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

We’ll see if Joker can come close to that haul when it is released in the UK on 4 October.
