How Anyone Can Achieve Perfect Eyeliner

Each day of New York Fashion Week the Yahoo Beauty editors will be sharing one life-changing beauty tip from the makeup artists, hair stylists, nail artists, and models we meet backstage.

Backstage at Michael Kors, I watched on as makeup artist Dick Page demonstrated the makeup look in great detail to his team before the show. The natural, healthy face was created using Michael Kors beauty products as well as a few items from MAC, but the thing that interested me was his use of brown gel eyeliner. As someone who always feels my eyes look too small with liner and doesn’t have the most steady hand, I ran home to try this eyeliner trick.

Page used MAC Fluidline in Dipdown ($16) and a liner brush and applied the liner very close to the lashes from the outer corner inwards. Don’t worry if the line isn’t totally straight! Even the master makeup artist used short choppy strokes that didn’t appear completely even. “I didn’t know this stuff was like a tattoo!” he said to the group, realizing it was too dry to blend. “You’ll have to work faster than I did but if this happens, just apply moisturizer on a thin brush to break down and soften the liner. Then only a trace of brown remains.” Genius!

To finish off the Michael Kors look, Page used a fluffy brush to push the liner down into the lash, so color deposits there. Next, curl the lashes, and apply brown mascara just on your top lashes. Voila—a totally natural, lined eye.
