Houston Astros win first World Series title in team history

Updated

For the first time in franchise history, the Houston Astros are World Series champions.

The Astros clinched the title with a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of this year's Fall Classic.

This was the Astros' second World Series appearance overall and their first as a member of the American League. Houston previously played in the 2005 World Series as the National League participant before switching to the AL in 2013.

The Astros were a losing team for much of recent memory, with three straight seasons of 100 losses or more from 2011 to 2013. This year, the team finished 101-61, which was the best record in the American League.

The emotional World Series win comes on the heels of the Houston area's recent struggle after being struck by Hurricane Harvey in August.
