The Scoop: Infrared saunas boast a lot of benefits: better skin, relaxed muscles, faster healing, and if that isn’t enough, can even burn 600 calories in one session. So it’s no wonder that more of these saunas are starting to pop up across the country. In Los Angeles there is Cedarhouse, a holistic day spa dedicated to infrared saunas. Though they offer other treatments as well (vitamin shots, massage, and mesotherapy) this place is all about the heat.
The Backdrop: You walk into what looks like a hip remodeling of one giant sauna. It’s all wood inside and a shelf lined with new age merchandise greets you up front. As you sign in, the staff pours you some water and asks if you’d like to do the “cayenne shot.” This helps you sweat even more and event faster. I went for it—and it was hot.
The Treatment: You’re walked back to your designated room that’s equipped with a sauna and shower. Don’t be shy: naked and wrapped in a towel is going to be your attire for the next 30-40 minutes. You can sweat it out with a friend or if you’re going solo, they offer meditation tracks you can listen to inside the sauna. A timer is set for 60 minutes, up to 40 minutes in the sauna and the rest of the time is to shower. Don’t feel like a failure if you can only do 30 minutes —you’ve still burned 600 calories.
After rinsing off in the shower, head up front and take advantage of the relaxing cold lavender cloth or the “mineral shot.” The shot tastes a bit like gritty vodka, but it’s supposed to help you get your footing again. Replenish yourself after with a smoothie from the all-organic & raw cafe that’s connected to the space, Life Food Organics.
Helpful Tips: They say it’s best not to do during your menstrual cycle, so make sure you plan accordingly. You’ll also want to do this on a day when you don’t have much else going on. The infrared sauna can take a lot out of you and you’ll likely find that a bed and a healthy meal are the only things you want afterwards.
Cedarhouse is opening up more locations very soon including NYC, London, Paris, Boston, Miami, Seattle and more in Los Angeles so you can sweat it out worldwide.
