HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST Debuts Stunning Gameplay Footage

A new adventure awaits Aloy in the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West. The action RPG followup to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn will let players explore an open world full of mystery and danger. As an already broken planet once again faces annihilation. But while that sounds dark and sinister, a new gameplay video shows it will be a journey through beautiful tropical settings. Which includes swims through luscious waters and treks across sandy beaches and rich jungles. But don’t worry, there’s still a whole bunch of robo-dinosaurs, along with some mechanical wooly mammoths.

Game developer Mathijs de Jonge introduced a new video from PlayStation that includes a nearly 14-minute long gameplay segment. (Which we first came across at Ars Technica.) It shows an early mission to rescue a friend from captivity. The segment provides a glimpse at the dangerous, yet absolutely gorgeous, setting Aloy and her new hairstyle finds herself in this time.

She’s journeyed to a frontier “that conceals mysterious new threats.” Which takes place in a partially underwater, totally transformed San Francisco.

But while this footage (from a PS5) is striking, the game’s official description points to a far darker story:

“The land is dying. Vicious storms and an unstoppable blight ravage the scattered remnants of humanity, while fearsome new machines prowl their borders. Life on Earth is hurtling towards another extinction, and no one knows why.

It’s up to Aloy to uncover the secrets behind these threats and restore order and balance to the world. Along the way, she must reunite with old friends, forge alliances with warring new factions and unravel the legacy of the ancient past – all the while trying to stay one step ahead of a seemingly undefeatable new enemy.”

And don’t forget the robot dinos. (How could we?) We can’t forget Horizon Forbidden West‘s release date either. But only because it doesn’t have one yet. Like the game itself, it would be beautiful if it manages to meet PlayStation’s original 2021 target date.
