Hood By Air’s New ‘Killer’ Accessory Was Inspired By Cookie Lyon

“I thought it was over my head, I thought it was genius and that’s why it was over my head,” Lee Daniels told Yahoo Style on Sunday at the Hood By Air show. The deconstructed clothes — and we mean, really deconstructed, the opening look featured a model in a completely backless jumpsuit — were worn by women and men alike. A gender-neutral zone where guys wear crop tops, T-shirt dresses, and long spliced skirts, and the ladies embody a new kind of sexy in button-down shirts and trousers that have cut apart revealing flashes of skin here and there.

Designer Shayne Oliver said that this collection was inspired by cutting up school uniforms where he grew up in the Caribbean, but with Daniels and Bryshere Y. Gray (who plays Hakeem on Empire) sitting front row center, we wondered if there were pieces that might appear on the second season of Empire? According to the director, the tributes were already baked in. “One model was carrying a pillow based on Cookie killing Lucious, which is really fascinating,” said Daniels. “They had a cookie shirt with a cookie in it. And the boots that they had I put in the opening shot, I had my son on the show, Akeem, wearing them.”

Could this be a harbinger of things to come? The pillow-turned-clutch will certainly be a coveted item among editors who love a bit of kitsch, and a Cookie for HBA collaboration could be just the thing for Oliver’s loyal following, men and women alike.
