Alma Har'el, the director of Shia LaBeouf's semiautobiographical 2019 film, Honey Boy, came out in support of FKA Twigs after the singer filed a lawsuit against the actor last week for sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress, according to The New York Times.

"I have a deep respect for FKA Twigs' courage and resilience," Har'el said in a statement, as reported by Variety. "Reading what she endured left me heartbroken and I stand with her in solidarity."

Before Twigs went public with her allegations, Har'el had defended LaBeouf, who has a history of substance abuse and a questionable reputation in the industry, championing his recovery, Variety noted. Now, however, the director has said that she is "painfully aware of my past investment in his recovery" and that she wants "to send a clear message today that none of the above should excuse, minimize, or rationalize domestic violence." She additionally said that she will be making donations to various organizations that support domestic abuse survivors.

LaBeouf addressed Twigs' allegations in a statement to the New York Times. “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel,” he said. “I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.” He additionally said that not all claims in the lawsuit are accurate.
