It’s time to turn down the hyperbole meter, folks.

Yes, This is the most climactic time of the year in NASCAR. On Friday, the Camping World Truck Series crowns its champion at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Saturday its the Xfinity Series’ turn. And Sunday, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. will race heads-up for the 2017 Cup Series title.

Calling it the biggest weekend of the NASCAR season is a fair and accurate statement. But there’s no need to go any further than that.

Unfortunately, the communications director at the Miami Zoo did.

The zoo did its yearly stunt in conjunction with Homestead where an animal makes a championship prediction. Peanut, a white-rumped vulture, picked Busch to win the title. It’s a biased selection because it was a foregone conclusion a bird named Peanut was going to pick the M&Ms driver. But that’s beside the point.

The point is this quote from Ron Magill in a release announcing Peanut’s prediction goes in the Hall of Fame of Absurd Quotes, if such a hall of fame existed.

“Ford Championship Weekend is the greatest sporting event in history,” Magill said in the release. “I urge everyone to get out to Homestead-Miami Speedway. It’s an incredible opportunity where people from all of the world come to see this race. The best thing for me is that it happens in my own backyard. For those who have never been to a race, it’s something that you will never forget.”

The. Greatest. Sporting. Event. In. History.

Hilarious. While we understand Magill is playing to his NASCAR friends’ audience, this is one of the most absurd quotes we’ve seen to promote NASCAR. And this is a sport filled with hyperbole and the desire to paint pictures as far brighter than they are.

Magill has set a new industry standard.
