An At-Home Threading Device Exists and It Looks Painful AF

This at-home threading device lets you remove facial hair all by yourself, but that doesn't mean you should.

In-salon threading is almost as painful as getting a tattoo — almost. Every time I get my brows or upper lip done, I get a strange sensation akin to blood is gushing out of my face like a waterfall. (It 100 percent never is.) I think it's my body's way of mourning my dearly departed hair. Because of this, I could never have the follow through required to try doing it to myself, at home. I can't bare that bleeding feeling. An at-home threading device does exist, though.

A makeup artist known to her 29,100 Instagram followers as eyecandybyrea posted a quick video of herself trying one out. The device resembles one of those compasses you'd use to draw circles in grade school. However, this contraption has thread involved instead of a sharp tip. When the top tines are squeezed together, the thread pulls away hair caught in its crosshairs. In a salon, someone does this same action, only by hand. According to Rea's caption, this technique is a bit more precise. She wrote, "Today I tried out this self threading device which I actually don't hate that much but it's definitely much better to get it done by a professional due to it being slightly patchy." You can watch her try out the device here.

Rea didn't share the details on the at-home threading device she used, but you can probably find a similar one in the depths of the Internet. I — along with the rest of the Allureteam — urge you to proceed with caution, though. I really wouldn't want you to accidentally remove half of one of your beloved brows — or any skin — with the thing. If you're adamant at removing your upper lip hair at home, though, allow me to suggest a pain-free option. Dermaplanning sloughs off dead skin, peach fuzz, and pesky lip hairs like a charm.
