Tom King, the comic book author who recently finished a three-year run writing Batman, sent out a tweet this morning that hints at what can only be described as a bombshell in the world of comic books. The only text in King’s tweet is the bat and cat emoji; it’s the attached picture that’s making news.
The picture is new art, presumably from a story King is working on, that shows Batman and Catwoman standing on top of a Gotham skyscraper. Their capes billow in the wind next to a T. Rex gargoyle. She stands in front of him, gazing up into his eyes, a pose straight out of a cheesy pregnancy photoshoot, which is appropriate because she is quite pregnant in the image.
King tagged Mikel Janin and Jordie Bellaire, a comic artist and colorist, respectively. Polygon speculates that their art is from either King’s upcoming Batman/Catwoman series or his contribution to the Catwoman 80th anniversary special. Either way, it’s a pretty damn big plot twist, particularly given where King left the characters.
In his previous Batman work, Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne broke off their engagement. She even told Bruce’s son Damian “I don’t think I should have a kid, no matter what Bruce’s opinion on the subject.” That’s a pretty definitive statement that suggests a major change to their relationship dynamic in the 35 intervening issues.
King has given his superhero characters offspring before. He made Mister Miracle and Big Barda parents in Mister Miracle, a 12-issue series about one of DC’s lesser-known characters.
On the other hand, King also has not been shy about introducing alternate universes and using dream sequences in his work. This frame could certainly come from the latter or be set in the former; at this point, we just don’t know.
Still, it’s definitely unusual to see a pregnant superhero — or pregnant super villain — in any kind of setting. And if it was meant as a tease — and why else would King post this image? — it’s certainly effective.
Unfortunately, we’ll have a bit of a wait before we can get to the bottom of this. The Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular won’t hit shelves until April 15, and Batman/Catwoman‘s release date is unknown after its January 2020 launch was delayed indefinitely.
