We all know that the film version of William Goldman’s The Princess Bride is slightly more famous than the excellent novel of the same name, but that’s okay. However, if there was suddenly a remake or reboot of The Princess Bride the movie, it would be tantamount to pop culture blasphemy, right?
On Tuesday, Variety published an interview with Norman Lear, the producer responsible for scores of well-known shows (like The Jeffersons) and, relevantly, the famous film version of The Princess Bride. In the interview, Lear seemed to hint at the idea that a remake or reboot of the film was possible, saying “Very famous people whose names I won’t use…they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride.’”
To be clear, Lear (who holds the rights to the film) did not say The Princess Bride will be remade, and everything seems to indicate it won’t. But even the suggestion of a remake pushed a lot of people over the edge. Even the film’s famous star, Cary Elwes tweeted his opposition to the idea, writing “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one,” a statement that would be boastful if it weren’t obviously true.

Some might say that no one should get too worked-up about movies being re-made and rebooted (it happens to other stories all the time!) but something does feel very different with The Princess Bride. It’s a kitschy film that is also heartfelt and funny and yet not entirely a comedy. It’s also a fantasy film that somehow seems unconnected to the rest of the fantasy genre. In other words, it’s one of a kind, and if you’re of a certain age, you don’t want to live in a world where the specialness of this movie gets taken away from you.
So, with that in mind, the news of a possible Princess Bride remake would make most sane people shout “INCONVIEABLE!” (as many on Twitter did).
