Hit Refresh on Your Look With These Cornrows

Sure, you really have endless protective style options, but IMO, you can never go wrong with cornrows. Thanks to the fact that they come in so many different shapes and sizes, you’re able to play around with mixed patterns and fun designs, giving your look some serious flare. On this week’s Braid Up, our resident stylist, Stasha Harris, is passing off braiding duties to New Jersey–based stylist Knolesha Hammary to whip up a unique take on classic cornrows. With her superhuman braiding skills, Knolesha is able to weave a dollar sign into the look. So cool, right?

Here are some tips to keep in mind when recreating this look:

1. Run a hydrating leave-in through your hair. Before you start braiding, your natural hair should be washed, detangled, and properly hydrated. A moisturizing leave-in conditioner will help keep frizz and flyaways at bay, giving your style a smooth look.

2. Spray on a lightweight oil. Put the finishing touches on your look by hitting it with an oil sheen spray to give your hair a hydrating boost and plenty of shine.

3. Focus on scalp care. You don’t have to deal with hours-long wash days when you have a protective style installed, but that doesn’t mean you’re completely off the hook. Weekly scalp treatments lock in the moisture needed for strong, healthy hair.

4. Use a silk scrunchie. When you want to throw your braids into a ponytail, be sure to grab a silk scrunchie to tie them up. Yes, it sounds a little bougie, but since they’re super gentle, they won’t cause any tension on your braids or leave behind an annoying ponytail indentation.
