Hillsong Church: Carl Lentz’s Wife, Laura, Breaks Silence Months After Cheating Scandal

Laura Lentz, wife of former Hillsong Church pastor Carl Lentz, just broke her months-long silence following the scandal that cost her husband his job. For years Carl was one of the most high-profile faces of the celebrity megachurch, often palling around with members like Justin Bieber. But last fall word got out that he’d cheated on Laura, and both Lentzes lost their jobs at the church. Hillsong cited “moral failures” as the reason for Carl’s termination.

In a long post on social media, Carl Lentz wrote, “I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life, and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone, and I take full responsibility for my actions. I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura, and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need.”

Laura, however, stayed silent…until now. For the first time since October 2020, Laura posted on Instagram, sharing a picture of palm trees silhouetted against a bright blue sky. In the caption, she didn’t address the scandal directly but clearly alluded to recent challenges.

“I have looked at these palm trees everyday for the past few months & there are many symbolic meanings to these amazing trees. a few that have resonated with me during this season of my life: they are strong, can weather the biggest storms, they always grow upwards. freedom, righteousness, reward, resurrection just to name a few...,” she began, before explaining her absence from the internet: “I have taken time away from social media because it was not good for my soul, i have blocked & deleted more people & comments than i can count. trolls are cowards, SOME ‘Christians’ are anything but kind, gracious, or loving...but that won’t stop me from growing upwards & getting stronger.”

She continued, “I will not forget who abandoned us, but i choose to keep my heart free of bitterness & remain thankful for those that have stayed & loved us. i don’t want to judge others nor do i want to be judged.” Lentz also shared the post on her Instagram Stories—clearly she wants her followers to take a look.

The Lentzes were married in 2003 and have three children. Hillsong Church terminated Carl Lentz’s  employment in November 2020.
