Hillary Clinton Gives Lizzo the Ultimate Stamp of Feminist Approval With One Simple Tweet

It looks like Lizzo made a very powerful new friend: Earlier today, the singer sent out a tweet with a video clip from the 2016 Democratic debate in which Hillary Clinton faced an entire panel of men, including this year’s candidate Bernie Sanders. All of the candidates are standing on stage with their hands over their hearts, but instead of saluting the national anthem, Lizzo’s feminist anthem “Truth Hurts” plays. The song is about not letting a man hold you down, standing up for yourself, and realizing the importance of asking yourself, as Lizzo sings in a low tone, “Why men great ‘till they gotta be great?” A poignant song for a period in our history, certainly. In reply to Lizzo’s tweet, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote part of another line of “Truth Hurts”: “I just took a DNA test, turns out…”

For the unfamiliar, the rest of the lyric is “turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.” (Clinton should teach a masterclass on the art of subtle tweeting.) Lizzo and Clinton may be two vastly different people, but their message is very much the same: They’re working to dismantle the patriarchy and empowering young women.

Naturally, the Twittersphere almost immediately blew up at Clinton’s reply to Lizzo, exclaiming hopeful, optimistic things like “2019 ‘gives zero fucks’ Hillary is awesome.” Indeed, the truth hurts, doesn’t it Mr. President?
