When you woke up earlier today you probably found your morning scroll just a little more confusing than usual, thanks to the oddest Instagram post from Hilary Duff. The picture shoes Hilary, husband Matthew Koma and a group of other people out for dinner. Except the group is pretty much all photoshopped... and includes Hilary's ex-boyfriend Joel Madden. Let's take a deep dive, shall we?

We're all for Instagram drama, but this was confusing to say the least. The post appeared on Hilary's Instagram late last night and shows her with husband Matthew out for a dinner date with several other couples badly edited into the snap, including Joel Madden and wife Nicole Richie. Sure, we were all baffled, but there's actually a reasonable explanation for it all: Hilary is fully trolling us, and fair enough.

The backstory is pretty simple. Earlier this week Hilary and Matthew actually did go out for a dinner date with this particular group of people; Joel Madden, Nicole Richie, Pete Wentz and girlfriend Meagan Camper, music executive Josh Abraham and his partner Gina Abraham.

Now, because Joel Madden and Hilary Duff used to date back in the iconic pop-punk-emo era of the early noughties people kind of lost it.

Responding to the rush of fan comments about the date night snap, Hilary clearly decided to poke fun at the situation with her own post, featuring some appropriately terrible photoshopping and captioned, "Date night part 2".

Obviously, people loved the post. "OMG THIS IS ICONIC HAHAHAHAHA," one fan commented. "SHE DID NOT 😂😂😂," another fan wrote, while others admitted that it took them a while to realise it was intentional and not just an accidental bad editing job; "I was like, is this photoshopped? 😂😂"

Very good, Hilary. Very good.
