Wildcats everywhere, wave your hands up in the air because High School Musical: The Musical: The Series just got renewed for a second season, nearly a month ahead of its premiere on Disney+. According to Deadline, production on the second installment will begin in early 2020 with filming taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The upcoming series, produced by Tim Federle, follows a group of East High theater students as they work towards a stage production of High School Musical. Starring Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Larry Saperstein, Frankie A. Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, and Mark St. Cyr, the spinoff of the hit 2006 Disney Channel Original Movie is certainly shaping up to be a truly meta teenage dream.
“We are incredibly excited to bring the next chapter of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series to Disney+,” Ricky Strauss, president of content and marketing at Disney+, said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “Tim and this talented cast have delivered a first season that is uplifting, funny, touching and relatable across generations. We are confident that the world, like us, will want much more of these characters, incredible songs and moments of joy.”
As noted by Deadline, the first episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will premiere on Friday, November 8 on ABC, Disney Channel, and Freeform ahead of the series’ Disney+ launch on November 12. There's still plenty of weeks until the highly anticipated streaming service makes its arrival, which is the perfect time to re-watch High School Musical films 1, 2, and 3, along with Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure for good measure. And who knows — with a second HSM: TM: TS season in the works, maybe Zac Efron will get that cameo after all. Here’s hoping!
