For Hideki Matsuyama, the 10th time was the charm. On Sunday, the Japanese golfer won the 2021 Masters Tournament, finishing at 10 under par. The win was a long time in the making for the 29-year-old Japanese golfer who first stepped onto the humid, lush greens of Augusta National in 2011. Now, Matsuyama is the first Japanese man to win a major U.S. title.

Matsuyama has been a steady presence on the PGA tour for the past decade, but Sunday’s victory marks his first win of one of the four major U.S. golf tournaments. In his first appearance at the Masters, he tied for 27th. He went on to finish in the Top 15 on four separate occasions. Matsuyama has come close to winning a major tournament on multiple occasions. In 2017, he finished second in the U.S. Open. He placed fifth in the 2015 Masters and fourth in the 2016 PGA Championship. Outside of the U.S. majors, Matsuyama has won five PGA tournaments and eight Japan Golf Tour championships, including one major.

Matsuyama turned in an incredible round on Saturday despite the rain delay. His bogey-free performance gave him a healthy four-stroke lead coming into Sunday. He maintained his lead until the 15th hole when one of his shots landed in the water. After Xander Schauffele scored a birdie on the same hole, Matusyama’s lead narrowed to two shots. He ended up winning the tournament by one stroke. Will Zalatoris came in second at 9 under, and Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele tied for third at 7 under par.
