HGTV's New 'Buy It or Build It' TV Series Will Be Your New Obsession

Get ready to add a new show to your must-watch list, because HGTV’s latest home renovation series Buy It or Built It is here. Starring Dallas-based twin brothers and contractors Chris and Calvin LaMont, the six-part TV show—which premiered on May 18— airs new episodes on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
The show follows the LaMont brothers as they engage in a little friendly competition. During each hour-long episode, the duo helps clients figure out if they should renovate an existing home or build a new one to fit their needs. Chris is team renovation, so his task is to look for properties that have potential. Based on the clients’ budget, he’ll share how he can give the home an updated look to suit their needs. At the same time, Calvin will present the clients with designs for a new build within their budget. When the clients choose to buy or build their dream home, the LaMont brothers are ready to make things happen.
"It's an opportunity to take something that is seen as undesirable and create something beautiful and soft after," Chris tells House Beautiful of his preference to renovate homes. "It's cool to see the family's faces when they see the result of a beautiful remodel."
Calvin likes the clean slate and lack of boundaries that comes with building a home from the ground up. "I love starting with a simple line on paper and transforming that into a home that represents the clients' wants and needs—aesthetically and functionally," he explains.
We also caught up with the LaMont brothers to find out what they can’t live without in their own homes. Apart from how they both need internet and a TV to, of course, watch Buy It or Build It, Chris says a comfortable mattress is a must. "No matter if I get four hours or eight hours of sleep, I want them to be good hours of sleep," he says. Similarly, a big sofa that can comfortably fit his whole family is essential.
Additionally, Calvin loves having a balcony to get fresh air and "a quick break from having a 3-year-old girl." Oh, and he swears by his blender for making strawberry banana or peanut butter banana smoothies every morning.
