With homes in Paris, N.Y.C. and L.A., German actress Diane Kruger spends enough time jetsetting between big cities to pick up the best of each place’s beauty routines. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the 39-year-old divulged her entire beauty routine — right down to her bold eyebrows — and explained that splitting her time between two continents means that she’s also splitting her take on beauty, depending on where in the world she is.

For example? Even though she tends to take a more (traditionally French) minimalist approach to beauty, often relying on just a brow pencil and red lipstick (M.A.C.’s Ruby Woo, thanks for asking), she also finds herself appreciating the Hollywood approach to movie makeup when she’s filming in France.

“It’s interesting, because I do both American movies and French independent films, the difference with makeup,” she told the NYT. “In American movies, especially the big-budget films, they definitely want the leading lady to look as good as she can. The French are always about being real, and less is more. Sometimes I have to fight to cover up my pimples.”

Another way she finds herself split between U.S. and European standards? Their very different approaches to fitness. “Paris is actually terrible for exercise,” she said. “Twenty years ago, when I first moved here, there was nothing. It’s gotten better, but the equipment is often really old. It’s harder to find good classes. For sure, L.A. and New York are fitness havens.”

That said, she admits a more laissez-faire take on exercise wouldn’t be the worst thing for her. “I eat everything in moderation — I don’t like junk food anyway — but I do exercise a lot. I’m probably overdoing it,” Kruger said. “I used to be a ballet dancer, but then for years I didn’t work out. As I got older and felt I needed to get toned and all those things, I started going to the gym. I also like to be outdoors, to cycle and hike. But now that I’m exercising, I can’t just go two or three times a week. Suddenly it’s working out every day for an hour and a half.”
