Hervé Léger Resort 2022

On Dec. 29, actress Gal Gadot debuted her first TikTok dance to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” while sporting a hot pink chunky turtleneck minidress. The look was one of creative director Christian Juul Nielsen’s designs from his fall Hervé Léger collection.

“I thought it was kind of funny,” Juul Nielsen stated, “but then the whole thing was really obvious to do a Wonder Woman collection. Empowering women!”

The look: The collection is filled with lots of metallics — “partly because it’s a resort collection, and partly because it goes with the armors” — strong shoulders, enticing cuts and party-ready fashions. In addition, Juul Nielsen continued his focus on bringing forth ’90s-inspired, clean, modern fashions with the brand’s body-hugging DNA in mind.

Quote of note: “For pre-collection and resort, I always do an ‘Icon Collection,’ with the bandage and everything. I like that they’re there, they work commercially as well. But then the main collection, I try to push more fashion…we’ve actually had more interest when it’s more of a full collection.”

Key pieces: Juul Nielson’s personal favorite: a viscose and nylon blend bodysuit with intriguing seamlines on the body and knubby long sleeves, offered in vibrant green or brown; a three-piece bronze look — bra top with miniskirt over long pants, featuring three different stitches — which nodded to the ’90s look (a bright green rendition felt just as fresh); ultra-high waisted column skirts with long-sleeve crop tops; ottoman stitched and foiled metallic little dresses, or “armorous” daywear with V-cut sleeves to accentuate its volume when scrunched at the elbow. Also, a fresh assortment of cutout layered dresses — a lightweight transparent layer stitched together as one piece atop a contrasting bandage dress underneath.

The takeaway: Juul Nielsen’s “less is more,” refined approach is working well for the label; coming out of the pandemic, his sexy, playful fashions feel refreshing and emboldening.
