Fire-related injuries and deaths are not uncommon. According to the National Safety Council, in 2021, there were a whopping 1,353,500 fires resulting in 3,800 civilian deaths and 14,700 injuries. "One home fire-related death occurs every three hours and eight minutes," they maintain. When fires start at night, the chance of death increases as people are sleeping and fail to wake up in time. One Iowa family recently became a statistic when their house caught fire in the middle of the night. However, one man, who happened to be driving down their street after taking a wrong turn, saved their lives.
A Mother Left Her Kids at Home While Attending to a Family Emergency
According to Tender Lehman, an Iowa mother, she was out of town in Montana due to a family emergency when the fire occurred. Her four children, ages 22, 17, 14, and 8, were sleeping in bed and were not aware that the house was burning down. No smoke alarm went off. An Aspiring Rapper Drove Down the Wrong Street and Spotted the Fire
Brendon Birt, an aspiring rapper, had taken a wrong turn and was driving down the Lehman's street, Red Oak, when he noticed the flames. He ran up to the house and pounded on the windows on the side of the house, as he was worried that the inhabitants were sleeping.
The Fire Was Worsening Fast
"Like every second that was going by was just getting worse," Birt said. "I just felt like somebody was in there because it was so late at night, you know? I just knew that I had to act quick." The entire encounter was caught on the family's Ring doorbell camera.
The Kids Woke Up to the Banging
The children maintain that the stranger's banging and screaming woke them up. "Everything was just black in the living room. There's nothing left of it," said Christopher Lehman. "Walked up into an oven of heat and flames on the front, the front wall," said Bryce Harrison, the eldest sibling.
The Kids Ran Out the Door
In the video, the kids can be seen running out the door of the burning house. "They came out the door. Like, I just felt like I just wanted to break down and cry. Like, I don't even know these people here," Birt said.
All Children and Two Dogs Survived the Fire
While all the children and two dogs made it out unharmed, five dogs did not make it out. The house is a total loss. And on Wednesday, their mother got to meet the hero who saved her children. "They're safe, and they're safe because of him. I mean, lives were saved here. Souls," Tender Lehman said.
Lehman Shared the Video to Instagram
Lehman shared the video on Instagram. "The day our lives changed forever! But, from the ashes right??" she captioned it. To help the family, you can donate to their GoFundMe page or you can Venmo @Tender-Lehman.
