One of my favorite Tina Turner fun facts is that she renounced her US citizenship.

For those who don't know, Tina had been living in Switzerland since the mid-'90s.

A clip of her on Larry King Live in 1997 is going viral of her explaining why she left America.

"I have left America because my success was in another country, and my boyfriend was in another country," the singer said.

"Basically, Europe has been very supportive of my music,” she elaborated.

She went on to say that Europe had been more supportive of her since her album Private Dancer came out in 1984.

“But you’re a major star here, you’re a superstar in America,” Larry King said back. “Not as big as Madonna. I’m as big as Madonna in Europe. In some places I'm as big as the Rolling Stones," she replied.

She emphasized this success to 60 Minutes: "No one in America knows [about] that [my success in Europe.]"

Tina Turner was an even bigger star in Europe than she was in America. "No one in America knows that. I mean, people are always shocked when I explain," Tina Turner told Mike Wallace in 1996. https://t.co/zIUAs9mfhw pic.twitter.com/w4W7uSAe4M

In 2013, Tina married German music producer Erwin Bach, became a Swiss citizen, and renounced her American citizenship.

So, ultimately, I guess we can blame Madonna for this one*.
