Christmas Eve is traditionally a day to watch classics like Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas with the Kranks (OK, maybe not that one). But this year, there’s a new title you should seriously consider adding to your holiday queue.
John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch will make its way to Netflix on December 24. We first heard about it back in September, and a little over a month before its premiere Mulaney introduced it in typically Mulanean fashion:
“I’m John Mulaney and I am a 37-year-old man. The Sack Lunch Bunch is a group of children ages 8 to 13 who are more talented than me. In this special, we are joined by celebrity guests like David Byrne, Tony Award winner André De Shields, Natasha Lyonne, Annaleigh Ashford, Shereen Pimentel, Richard Kind, and Jake Gyllenhaal from the movie Zodiac.”
Children’s classics 3-2-1 Contact and Sesame Street are among the inspirations for the show, which will be formatted as a variety show as that long list of celebrity guests indicates.
Mulaney himself says the special will be “a collage of Broadway-caliber showstoppers, comedy sketches for all ages, meditations on the unknown from children and adults, and a papier-mâché volcano. It’s funny, musical, joyous, anxious, and surprisingly profound.”
Despite the release date, there’s nothing at the moment that indicates it will be an explicitly Christmas-themed special. The only potential sketch we know about, which Mulaney described in an interview with Esquire, is decidedly not holiday-themed.
“A kid does a book report on A Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion, thinking it was a magic book: ‘Unlike 1001 Marvelous Magic Tricks to Amaze Your Friends, this is a gripping memoir of grief from one of the greatest writers of her generation!'”
That may not be a festive idea, but it sounds damn hilarious. We’ll see if it made the final cut when John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch makes its debut on Christmas Eve.
