  • How to Get Away with Murder is ending after season 6.

  • The ABC show starring Viola Davis has been airing since 2014.

  • Show creator Peter Nowalk opened up about the cancellation in a statement.

Here’s the worst news you’ll hear all day: How to Get Away With Murder has officially been axed.

The popular ABC show has been entertaining audiences since its premiere in 2014. People (fine, me) were obsessed with deciphering the Viola Davis-starred series’ many mysteries, and figuring out the truth behind the characters’ often misguided motives.

The trials and tribulations of Annalise Keating and her messy mentees were certainly polarizing, and even landed Viola with an Emmy Award. So why would ABC cancel such a popular hour of television? Here’s what we know.

Why was 'How to Get Away With Murder' cancelled?

According to show creator Peter Nowalk, it wasn’t easy to cut HTGAWM loose, but he and Shonda Rhimes just thought it was time.

“Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do—as it did here,” he said, according to Deadline. “For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending.”

When will it end?

How to Get Away With Murder will end after its sixth season, which debuts on Thursday, September, 26 at 10 p.m. Fortunately, viewers will have 15 whole episodes surrounding the characters' last semester of law school to enjoy before it goes off the air for good.

“Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom,” Peter said of the last installments. “I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.”

How does Shonda Rhimes feel about this?

Shonda responded on social media shortly after the news broke.

“#HTGAWM has brought us six years of twists & turns. Thank you to the cast, crew, and writers for your dedication and passion,” she wrote. “Thank you to the fans who have watched every Thursday sicne the beginning. Finally, thank you, [Pete]. Working with you has been a true pleasure.”

Anyone else feel like they need to take a personal day to recover/watch every episode ever made?
