Here's what is open on New Year's Day and New Year's Eve

After a hearty New Year's Eve celebration, everyone could use a day off to recover and start the new year on the right foot.

Fortunately, most people will have two days of recovery to start 2023 with New Year's Day falling on a Sunday.

Practically everything is open on New Year's Eve, though some businesses may have shortened hours to enjoy some downtime ringing in 2023 with family and friends. Here's a look at what is open and closed on New Year's Day:

Are government offices open New Year's Day?

No. Since New Year's Day lands on a Sunday, all government offices will be closed.

All federal and state offices will also be closed from legislature to the courthouse on Monday, Jan. 2. Check with individual Illinois Secretary of State facilitities for a respective closing date, as some state holidays may be observed on different days.

Following the state's lead, Peoria County government offices and the city will also be closed Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of New Year's Day.

Will the post office be open New Year's Day?

While the United States Postal Service will shutter their doors New Year's Day, the post office will be fully functional on New Year's Eve. Your mail will be delivered and packages can be sent. Items dropped off in blue collection boxes will be gathered around noon. Offices will be closed and no mail will be delivered on Monday, Jan. 2.

Will banks be open on New Year's Eve?

Most banks along with the stock markets will be open normal business hours on New Year's Eve, but will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of New Year's Day falling on Sunday. Call ahead before you go. Banks are closed New Year's Day.

What else is closed for New Year's Day?

Enjoy the extra time with your kids as most schools are closed for the holidays, but don't expect to to check out any books from the local library on New Year's Day. Most branches will be closed both Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of the holiday.

Will my trash get picked up on New Year's Day?

Trash will be picked up in Peoria one day after your regularly scheduled pickup day in observance of the New Year's Day holiday.
