Easter weekend is a sacred time in the life of a Christian, and we're not just talking about Sunday. It begins with Good Friday, a holy day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Of course, there are many ways to observe and they will differ from family to family. Some may break their fast by enjoying traditional foods on Good Friday (have you tried Ree Drummond's amazing hot cross buns?!). Others might take the "only seafood" or vegetarian approach to the day. Many will prepare for Easter mass by using Friday as a time for solemn reflection. But since 21% of Americans have the day off from work, there is often a bit of confusion about what is open and closed on Good Friday.

Though Good Friday is not a federal holiday, it is a holiday in 12 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas. So, what the heck does that mean? A state holiday means that, in those particular states, courts and state offices are closed, as well as many banks, government buildings, public libraries, and schools.

Whether you're religious or not, Good Friday is the time to prep your Easter decorations, start planning your Easter dinner, or simply run your usual weekend errands. That's why we've created this ultimate guide to what's open on Good Friday 2022. Here's what is likely open in your local community:

Government Offices

Since Good Friday is not a federal holiday, city, state, and federal government buildings remain open—including courthouses. However, many states allow employees to observe it as an optional holiday. This is all to say that some government offices may have reduced hours.

If you need to run to the bank, chances are you're in luck! Just as Good Friday is not a federal holiday, it's also not a recognized bank holiday. However, some institutions' hours may vary, and not every bank will be open.

The U.S. Post Office

The post office is open on both Good Friday and Easter, so you can receive and send your cute Easter baskets on time! While UPS and FedEx are open on Good Friday, they aren't on Easter.

Public Schools

It depends. Many schools' spring breaks actually fall over Good Friday, and the kids will be off already. Catholic schools and other private schools also frequently take the day off. Generally, though, most schools continue teaching on Friday.

Public Libraries

If you're looking for a good book to read to the kids on Easter, you're probably good to head over to your local library. Still, your best bet is to call ahead of time to confirm that they'll remain open or if hours have changed.

U.S. Stock Markets

The markets close for very few holidays, but this is one of them! The U.S. stock markets close on Good Friday, including the New York Stock Exchange Market and Nasdaq. So, all trading activity must wrap up on Thursday or be moved to Monday.

As with the many stores and restaurants open on Easter, major retailers are usually open on Good Friday. These stores include Walmart, Starbucks, and Kroger, and Amazon will (of course) continue to deliver.
