Apple hosted one of its signature product announcement events at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California today, sharing news about their upcoming iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch updates, and subscription services. Sales of the iPhone have dropped by double digits recently, so we were curious to see what they would try to do to bring new customers in. After all, the holidays are coming, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who desperately wants a new phone for Christmas (though it’s fun to read the news through a screen so shattered it looks like a spiderweb, right?).

What most of us are curious about are the new iPhones – the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.

The iPhone 11 definitely looks a little different than previous versions. Most noticeable? The two lenses on the rear facing camera, and the fact that the iPhone 11 comes in six colors: yellow, purple, light blue, black, red, and silver.

If you mostly use your phone for snapping pictures and videos, then the specs on the new camera are sure to excite you. The dual camera system features 12-megapixel lenses and the option of taking wide or ultra-wide photos. The front facing camera is also getting an upgrade, from a 7 megapixel lense to a 12 megapixel lense, meaning your selfies are about to get a lot cuter.

The camera will have night mode, 2x optical zoom, new portrait lighting, and 4k video in both the front- and rear-facing cameras. You’ll also be able to take slow-motion selfie videos which is probably appealing to like a handful of influencers, but still exciting – Apple is calling them “slofies.”

This also means the new phone will use a lot of power, but luckily Apple says that the iPhone 11 battery stays charged for an hour longer than the iPhone XR.

Then, there’s the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.

If the thought of having two camera lenses excites you…what about three? The iPhone 11 Pro, which comes with a 5.8 or 6.5 inch display (the Pro Max), has three rear-facing cameras. It has a Super Retina XDR display for watching HD videos, and comes in four colors: silver, gold, space grey, and midnight green.

Both phones have an A13 Bionic processor chip, which means everything will run faster and more smoothly.

The iPhone 11 starts at $699.

Other products announced at the event were the Apple Watch Series 5 which has a few new features and will retail starting at $399, and the seventh generation iPad, which has a larger 10.2-inch retina display and will retail for $329.

They also announced their new subscriptions Apple Arcade (for gaming) and Apple TV+ (for streaming shows and movies), both of which will be $4.99 a month.

While nothing here seems too wild and crazy or innovative, we’re still excited by the thought of the iPhone 11’s improved cameras and battery life. After all, better selfies and less charging time are always a winning combo for us!
