Will there be a Season 2 of The Diplomat?

If you loved The Diplomat season one, get ready because Netflix has officially greenlit a second season for the political drama series. "We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it," series creator Debora Cahn said to the streamer. Executive Producer and star Keri Russell is just as excited. "I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun?"

When would it come out?

It's hard to know the exact timeline since The Diplomat was just renewed but based on the 15 months that it took for Season 1, you might be able to expect a similar timeline for Season 2.

Which cast members would be returning?

Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger that left the fates of multiple characters up in the air. Merritt Grove's car explodes just seconds before the finale ends, putting Stuart, Hal, Ronnie, and Merritt in danger, so there's a chance that those characters and their respective actors will not have significant roles in the next season.

But other than speculation and guessing, there's no way of figuring out who will be (theoretically) returning for Season 2.

Have the cast and crew said anything about Season 2?

Rufus Sewell, who plays Hal Wyler, spoke to Netflix's Tudum about his thoughts on the ~explosive~ final episode. When asked if the bomb left any survivors, Sewell said, "I hope so."

"All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed,” the actor continued. “I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows? I would like someone with a better imagination than mine to take over on that rather than follow my dumb suggestions.”

Here's to hoping that there are enough problems for multiple seasons of The Diplomat. Keep checking back here for more deets — we'll be covering them for you as news unfolds.
