The movie has been the subject of much chatter online (and everywhere else) since it was first announced, but nobody seems to know what this movie is actually about.

The trailer is chockfull of clever details, but still keeps a tight lid on the plot itself.

Lucky you, I am here to sleuth and have all the details here:

1.Aside from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie has a star-studded cast playing Barbies, Kens, and humans.

2.There's also Midge and Allan, played by Emerald Fennell and Michael Cera. Mattel introduced them both in the '60s as friends of Barbie and Ken.

Midge was the subject of some controversy in 2002 when Mattel released a Midge doll that was pregnant. Movie Midge is also pregnant in a nod to this piece of Barbie history.

3.You might have noticed from the posters that almost all of the Barbies are described by what job they have, while the Kens don't seem to have jobs and are simply described as being Kens.

4.Here's the movie's tagline as listed on IMDB: "To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you're a Ken."

5.And here's the tagline from the poster: "She's everything. He's just Ken."

All this emphasis on Barbie being "perfect" and "everything" sure sounds like the makings of the aforementioned existential crisis.

6.Will Ferrell's comments about the movie also shed some light on the themes we should expect it to explore.

7.There is no one better than Greta Gerwig to direct this movie, which she also co-wrote with her partner Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling called it "the best script [he's] ever read."

8.Based on the trailers we've seen so far, Ryan Gosling's Ken has a rivalry with Simu Liu's Ken.

9.This rivalry may or may not lead to a massive Ken fight at some point in the movie.

There's definitely some sort of fight amongst the Kens.

10.The movie has at least one "incredibly unique" dance sequence, and maybe even more based on the trailers.

11.If you're expecting this to be an entirely kid-friendly movie because it's based on a toy, think again. Barbie will have a PG-13 rating, which you can clearly see in the trailer as Ryan-Ken and Simu-Ken argue about "beaching" each other off.

12.At some point, Barbie and Ken will leave Barbieland, even though it looks like Barbie would prefer to make the trip without Ken.

13.Thanks to some paparazzi shots that went viral last year, we also know that Barbie and Ken will get into some hijinks during their time in the real world.

14.Barbie will seemingly ditch Ken at some point to hang out with America Ferrera and Ariana Greenblatt's characters.

15.Greta, Margot, Ryan, and America recently appeared at CinemaCon to talk about the movie and shared a trailer that revealed a few more details about the plot.

16.Finally, Barbie will premiere in theaters on July 21, 2023.
