What Celebrities Had to Say About the Queen’s Passing at the Emmy Awards

Fans weren’t sure whether Queen Elizabeth II’s passing would be mentioned during the 2022 Emmy Awards, which took place just four days after her death. And while there wasn’t any major acknowledgement of her passing, a few actors did take a moment to reflect on the Queen and share what the end of her historic royal reign means to them.

“It makes me emotional to think about it,” Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham said of the Queen’s passing. According to her, they even paused filming season 3 of Ted Lasso out of respect.

Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey, who’s from New Zealand, also spoke about the monarch’s death. “It’s so sad. I feel for her family,” she said. “I feel for anyone’s family who loses someone.”

Later on, we saw that the Queen was not featured in the Emmys’ In Memoriam segment, which wasn’t a surprise considering that the tribute is usually reserved for memorializing those in the entertainment industry. However, some viewers still took to Twitter to call out the Television Academy for not honoring her.

Oh, and there was an awkward moment during Succession creator Jesse Armstrong’s speech after the series won for Best Drama, when he quipped that there was “evidently a bit more voting involved in our win than with Prince Charles.” My guy, maybe not the time?!

Two days before the Emmys, a number of stars led the charge in wearing all black to the Venice Film Festival to show that they were in mourning. Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Brown were all seen donning black dresses on the red carpet during the event’s closing ceremony, which also served as the premiere for the film The Hanging Sun, where Jessica stars as one of the lead characters.

Last Thursday, Buckingham Palace was the first to announce the tragedy, confirming on its social accounts that Queen Elizabeth II had died “peacefully”:

The announcement came a mere day after the world was shocked by the news that the monarch’s health was deteriorating, with Buckingham Palace issuing a brief 29-word statement: “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

Immediately, it was reported that Kate Middleton was in Windsor with her three children, all of whom began school last Wednesday, while other members of the royal family headed to Balmoral, Scotland, where the Queen’s health was being monitored (and where she subsequently passed away).

Kate’s husband, Prince William, made the voyage to Scotland promptly after leaving Adelaide Cottage on Thursday, and it was announced that Prince Harry was also en route to join the rest of Queen Elizabeth’s loved ones. While it was initially reported that Meghan Markle would join the family in Scotland, the news was ultimately retracted. However, we now know that both Wills and Kate and Harry and Meghan ultimately did come together to join mourners at Windsor Castle.

The impactful moment marked the foursome’s first public appearance as a group since the Queen’s passing, and per tradition during a period of national mourning, both the newly appointed Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were dressed in all black.
