Here’s How to Help the Bahamas After Hurricane Dorian

People are coming together to help days after Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm, killing at least seven people and causing complete devastation throughout the islands.

The catastrophic and slow-moving storm made landfall on Great Abaco Island with sustained winds of 185 mph over the weekend, the strongest storm to hit the area since 1935. Images of the aftermath of the hurricane show decimated homes and large swaths of flattened land as well as devastating flooding. Dorian is currently spinning off the coast of Florida, threatening several states in the U.S.

At least seven people have died from the storm in the Bahamas, including an 8-year-old boy, with the death toll expected to rise, according to CNN.

In an effort to help, the Atlantis organized a GoFundMe page with 100 percent of the proceeds going to The Bahamas Red Cross, the hotel told Travel + Leisure in an email. The fund has already raised more than $49,000 of its $1 million goal.

The hotel is also working with celebrity chef Jose Andres and his charity World Central Kitchen, which he mobilized to feed people after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017. For Dorian, Andres and his team landed in Nassau ahead of the storm to begin staging relief efforts, The Washington Post reported.

The spokeswoman for the Atlantis said the hotel is working to make sure food and supplies are prepped and ready to be brought over to Great Abaco Island and Grand Bahama.
