In the very first Star Wars movie ever, Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi died. And, he’s been coming back ever since. Now, it looks like Ewan McGregor will return to a role he first started playing back in 1999 in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. But this time, McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi won’t be in a Star Wars movie, but instead, the focus of his own Star Wars TV series.
On Thursday, news broke from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Ewan McGregor was in talks to reprise his role as Obi-Wan in an exclusive miniseries for the new streaming service Disney+. One source said the series would not be ongoing, but instead, be limited to 6 or 8 episodes.
Crazy but true news: Ewan McGregor is in negotiations to return as OBI-WAN KENOBI for a Disney+ event mini-series. Would be 6 or 8 episodes according to a source. https://t.co/rQrZiHhr5w

For hardcore fans of Star Wars, this news might feel a little bit like a Jedi mind trick. After all, back in 2017, similar news broke that McGregor was returning to play Obi-Wan in a standalone anthology Star Wars film, similar to Rogue One and Solo. Since then, though, McGregor has repeatedly claimed that those projects were never happening. So, because Disney has yet to confirm the McGregor news this time, should everyone assume it’s real or is this a Dark Side deception?
Because Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both confirmed the story, it seems like there will be an official announcement from Disney very soon. And, since the future of Star Wars appears to be on TV after the release of The Rise of Skywalker, a TV series starring one of the most famous characters in the entire saga might be just enough nostalgia to tide everyone over until the next big Star Wars movie in 2022.
If confirmed, the new Obi-Wan series will stream on Disney+, the new Disney streaming service which will include several new Marvel TV shows and two other Star Wars TV shows, including The Mandalorian and another series starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor from Rogue One.
What will the Obi-Wan movie be about? Well, in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan goes into hiding on Tatooine, watching over baby Luke Skywalker from a distance. And then, in the original film, when Obi-Wan is played by Sir Alec Guinness, about 18 years have passed. So, that’s almost two decades worth of hanging around in the desert for a TV miniseries to play with. And for those of us who were young enough to remember having awesome Ewan McGregor toys in 1999, it’s nice to see our generation’s Jedi Master returning to our favorite galaxy.
