From Town & Country

Over the course of the first three seasons of The Crown, Lord Mountbatten has been portrayed as an uncle meddling in Prince Philip's relationship with the future Queen Elizabeth, a sympathetic confidant to Prince Charles, and a military man, who helped to plot a coup to overthrow Harold Wilson's government. (More on the veracity of that last storyline, here.) Season four of the Netflix series about the royal family will recreate his funeral.

Both Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman (who play Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth on the show) were spotted filming scenes at Winchester Cathedral this week wearing somber attire.

A recent Instagram post by a visitor to the church shows a few props from the set, including an order of the service and the funeral's program.

Mountbatten, who has been played by both Charles Dance and Greg Wise in The Crown, was killed in August of 1979 in an attack by the Irish Republican Army. Mounbatten was fishing off the coast of Mullaghmore, Ireland when his boat exploded from a bomb that had been smuggled on board. His grandson, Nicky Knatchbull, who was just 14 at the time was also killed in the blast, as was Paul Maxwell, a teenage boathand. Another passenger, the Dowager Lady Brabourne, died the next day.

“My family and I were relaxed and happy going out into a flat, calm sea in my grandfather’s fishing boat,” Timothy Knatchbull, one of Mountbatten's grandchildren who was also on the boat later recalled.

“I remember climbing onto the roof of the cabin and talking to my grandfather, who was steering. I have a distant memory of the sound of the explosion and of a very violent sensation, then nothing.”

At the time, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace shared that Queen Elizabeth was "deeply shocked" by the news. Viewers of The Crown will be sure to see that emotion play out on screen.

Season four is filming now, and rumored to be released later this year, but an official premiere date has yet to be announced.
