While the first Monday in May brought out A-listers and a glittering red carpet, this past Monday saw some of New York and Italy’s finest reassemble at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a private tour of this year’s exhibition, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Remarks from Wendy Yu curator in charge of the Costume Institute Andrew Bolton gave the eager crowd added insight as they took in the exhibition, which spans the Medieval and Byzantine galleries, with the Vatican collection being housed in the museum’s nearby Anna Wintour Costume Center gallery.

The evening celebrated the friendship between the Met and the Italian consulate; Consul General Francesco Genuardi kicked off the festivities at his residence with a toast, followed by remarks from the Met’s senior vice president for institutional advancement Clyde B. Jones III. The room was filled with guests including Marina Moscone, Wendi Murdoch, and Stefano Tonchi. Also taking the long walk across Fifth Avenue to the consul general’s residence were guests Penny Abeywardena from the New York City mayor’s office and designers including Ji Oh, Morgan Lane, and Victor Glemaud; all were treated to Italian fare from Cipriani and equally scintillating conversation.
