Heartwarming video shows moment baby hears her big sister for the first time

A video of an 11-month-old baby’s reaction after receiving her first hearing aids is bringing smiles to people’s faces and tears to their eyes.

Carol Benjamin of Madison, Georgia, shared the video on her Facebook page Thursday where it quickly racked up thousands of views and shares because of her daughter, Scarlet’s, genuine reaction to hearing her big sister for the first time.

“When Scarlet was born she was 3 months early. She ended up getting [Necrotizing enterocolitis] (and certain stomach infection) and the antibiotics that she needed cause hearing loss,” Benjamin shared. “It has been a LONG and emotional experience.”

Necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC, is an intestinal disease which is most common in premature, sick, or low-weight newborns and occurs when tissue in the intestine becomes inflamed and then dies, according to FamilyDoctor.org. While there is no exact cause, premature babies often have compromised immune systems and weaker digestion systems, lending to NEC becoming more of a threat.

On Thursday, Scarlet received her hearing aids at Atlanta Hearing Associates in Milledgeville, Ga., and Benjamin says that it has made a “world of a difference.”

In the video, Scarlet breaks out into laughter when she hears her older sister speak to her.

“Enjoy one of the absolute best days of our lives,” Benjamin wrote, and warned, “By the way, I’m crying, you’re crying, everyone is crying.”
