You Need to Hear H.E.R.’s New Song About Loving Her Hair

Through the years, we have seen Black artists craft songs about their hair and all the feelings that come with it. In 2006, India Aria's "I Am Not My Hair" served as a reminder that for Black women, our hair doesn't always have to be a political statement — it can just be. Ten years later, Solange released "Don't Touch My Hair" to let people know to keep their hands to themselves and that Black women deserve autonomy over their hair and bodies. Now, Gabriella Wilson, most commonly known as H.E.R., has created a love song dedicated to her hair, which premiered on Elmo's new talk show, the Sesame Street spinoff Not-Too-Late Show.

On July 17, the artist shared the video of her performance of "I Love My Hair" on IGTV. Our favorite red childhood friend, Elmo, starts the video by introducing H.E.R., who is getting ready to perform in a gray sweatshirt, burgundy plaid pants, and white platform shoes. With her acoustic guitar in hand, she starts singing, "I love something, yes, I do."

For the next two minutes, H.E.R. shares the love she has for her hair in all the many forms it takes. "I wear it up, I wear it down, I wear it twisted all around, I wear braids and pigtails too, I love all the things my hair can do," she sings in her soothing voice. Like she states in her lyrics, the star has worn her hair in box braids, slicked-back low ponytails, and top knots full of volume. Her signature look is her beautiful, long hair parted down the middle with waves cascading towards her hips, similar to how she's wearing it in the video.

As she sings about different hairstyles, Muppets with each style walk across the screen. The four muppets, shown above, each whip and shake their heads to show off their hair.

To finish the song, she continues, "In barrettes or flying free, they're the perfect tresses, you see. My hair is part of me, an awesome part of me. I really love my hair," earning a round of applause from the audience.

We are thankful to H.E.R. for giving us this beautiful little song, and can't wait to hear people all over blasting it when they want a few moments of peace and a boost of hair confidence.
