Healthy, TikTok-approved crab chips take only 10 minutes in the air fryer: ‘It tastes like junk food’

This crab chip recipe might be the perfect dupe for your fave H-Mart crab chips.

Air fryer crab chips, sometimes called crab sticks, are all the rage on TikTok. The simple recipe is a quick, tasty snack and a great option for those looking for a potato chip alternative or a low-fat, low-calorie treat. The primary ingredient is imitation crab, a non-vegan crab alternative made of fish, egg white, starch, surimi paste and other additives.

Watch as In The Know’s Poppy Shen tests the viral recipe out. Fortunately, this time around, she was pleasantly surprised with the results, a nice change after the vegan “watermelon katsu” incident. (They can’t all be gems!)

“This is one of the easiest snacks at home: three ingredients, 15 minutes and kind of healthy, too,” she says.

Ingredients:

  • Imitation crab

  • Olive oil

  • Garlic salt

  • Pepper

Step 1: Unravel the imitation crab and slice it into thin pieces.

Step 2: Next, in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, then season with garlic salt and pepper.

Step 3: Cook in your air fryer for 10 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Enjoy.

When Poppy digs into a plate full of the crispy, savory snack, she’s completely stunned.

“Oh my god, it’s actually really good. They taste actually like those crab chips you get from H-Mart. Like legit snack bags. You can taste a hint of the crab flavor,” Poppy says. “And it’s really crispy.”

She thinks it will be the perfect treat to sate those afternoon and midnight snack cravings.

“This is extremely healthy, but it tastes like junk food, which is a really good sign,” she adds. “It means it’s really good.”

According to WebMD imitation crab is more affordable, and “both are similar in calorie count, but real crab meat has more protein, vitamins and minerals and is much less processed.” So while it isn’t exactly a healthy food, it’s still a low-cost treat with more nutritional value and much less added sugar and saturated fats than, say, a Snickers bar.
